2021 Greener Greenspace Profile

Urban Harvest Circle Community Garden

Located in a dense neighbourhood in Guelph, ON, the Urban Harvest Circle Community Garden is a volunteer-led garden that uses organic methods to grow fresh food and support pollinators.

Design and Process

Urban Harvest Circle Community Garden is a community garden in Guelph, located in the midst of a dense residential neighbourhood. The garden is volunteer-led and follows community garden guidelines to use organic practices, compost on-site and support pollinators.

The soil is tended using organic methods to support soil microorganisms. Mulch is used to retain moisture and to suppress weeds. A perennial border with pollinator plants support pollinators. City water is collected and stored in water barrels so that chlorine dissipates before being used.

Community Collaboration

The garden is adjacent to a playground and dog park and many neighbours come over to the garden to see what is happening and to learn about gardening methods.  The garden is maintained by a group of dedicated garden volunteers who share the tasks to maintain the garden as an active and productive community space.

Guelph is a Bee City and there is a large community garden network that meets in person and online to share organic growing practices and methods.

Greener Greenspaces is a recognition program for sites from across Canada that exemplify greener greenspace stewardship. The aim of the program is to showcase examples of ecologically-focused land care as a means to inspire others and to further the movement across Canada.
